2010/2011 Class Descriptions
- Art (5th-12th)
- Class Description: Lets have fun together learning about art through design, drawing, painting and art history. Our final project will be a matted painting that you have made.
Homework: Homework is NOT required for this class. - Required Books: There are NO required books for this class.
- Class Fee: YES there is a class fee of $5.00.
Grading: NO the teacher will be NOT be grading this class however she will be grading the end of the year project.
- Chocolate/Baking (5th-8th)
- Class Description:Students will start off with basic chocolate making and end with baking/cooking techniques. Students will learn the history of chocolate, types and taste of chocolate, and candy making with chocolate.
Homework: Homework is NOT required for this class. - Required Books: Will need a folder with prongs on first day.
- Class Fee: There is NO fee for this class, however the students will need to bring materials/ingredients when needed.

- Creative Writing (8th-12th)
- Class Description:The high school targeted Creative Writing class will be based on stimulating creative thought and exposing students to a variety of writing expressions including many short stories based on works of art, biographies, auto-biographies, poetry, journalism, letter-writing and one formal research essay.
The attitude of the class will be upbeat with a "surprise" topic presented in each class. We will discuss methods of writing and general points of what makes a good writer.
- Homework: YES about 1 hour per week of homework will be required (but is not limited to that time based on the student's overall interest and effort in the class).
- Required Books: YES students will be required to bring some kind of spiral notebook and pen/pencils.
- Class Fee: There is NO fee for this class.
Grading: YES the teacher will be grading this class. NOTE FROM TEACHER: Although by profession, an editor, I do not intend to "grade" students work based on spelling, grammar, or general English ability. Rather, my intent is to grade on class participation, content, and logical thought patterns.
- Drama (5th-12th)
- Class Description: This class is a student led class. Drama students will brainstorm ideas for the year's schedule and will preform in front of the co-op at least twice. Come with your ideas and dreams for an end-of-the-year play and we'll have a great time working together and making this class just what we want!
- Homework: No homework will be given other than memorizing lines.

Grading: YES the teacher will provide a grade for credit upon parental request. - Etiquette for Girls (5th-12th)
- Class Description:We'll all take a look at ways to improve manners in various social situations. Also, we'll take a look at inner and outer beauty.
- Homework: YES there will be light homework in this class.
- Required Books: YES there is a required book for this class. Total Image by Lynda Murphy. The cost is $12.00 on the Barnes and Noble website.

- Class Description: This class teaches high school students about money and how to make sound financial decisions for life. Chapters include: Reasons to save money, how to make a budget, compound interest, college funding, how to balance a checkbook, and many others.
- Homework: YES homework is required. Approximately 1 hr of homework per week. (sometimes a little more)
Required Books: There is a required book that costs $12.00. Books will either be purchased from Dave Ramsey's website or from co-op. We will update that information soon.

- Fishing (7th-12th)
- Class Description: This course will take you through the basics of fishing. Learning how to catch different species, and lure making. You will learn what fish bite best at different times of the year, and what to fish with, both artificial bait and live bait. We will go over several types of equipment to give you a new look at all of the different ways to spend time on the water fishing. The lure-making part of this class lets you make something to test on our field trip(s), including at least two of these options topwater baits, soft plastic baits, and fly fishing flies. You will learn different types of casting styles, and why you need to know them. We will have casting competitions that could win you the top prize. The top prize will disclosed later in the class, and it is really something special. Come learn about fishing with me this fall.

Pottery (5th-8th)
Class Description:This class will teach the basic techniques of pottery with plenty opportunity for hands-on experience. History about this ancient craft dating back to Bible times will be woven throughout the course as well. Homework: Homework is NOT required for this class.

- Scrapbooking (5th-12th)
- Class Description: In this class students will learn to take their pictures and put them into scrapbook form. We will be learning many techniques and should complete a 6x6 scrapbook as well as other projects to be shared with family and friends.
Homework: YES 15-30 minutes of homework is required for this class. (Homework will not be every week) - Required Books: There are NO required books for this class.

Stone Tools (7th-12th)
Class Description: In this class you will learn how the native Americans made stone tools. From Spearheads, arrowheads, and knives out of stone, you will also learn how some kitchen utensils from thousands of years ago were made and utilized. You will learn things about the native culture that will surprise you, and give you a new appreciation for the first Americans including, arrow-making, leatherwork, and some beadwork. Not only will you learn how stone tools were made with original tools, you will learn to make your own arrowhead or spear-point from stone as well using modern Flintknapping tools from a tool kit that you keep. When this class is over, you will be, a Flintknapper. On the last day of class there is a surprise to test your Knapping skill. Flintknapping is fun, creative, and a way to connect with the past.

Taekwondo (5th-12th)
Class Description: Beginning Tae kwon-do basics, with stretching exercises. Some Korean terminology and basic self defense techniques.

Typing 1st period (5th-12th)
Class Description: This is a Computer Keyboarding/Typing focused on teaching the fundamentals for such class. A laptop is required for the class and will need to be brought back and forth between co-op and home. The software being purchased by the student will be the students to keep, and use even after the co-op year is finished. I am planning to grade the class so that upperclassmen can use it as a High School Elective Credit.

U.S. Constitution (5th-8th)
Class Description:Learn about our U.S. Constitution, our framers, the first ten
amendments, known as the "Bill of Rights", and the Preamble. Learn about all 27
amendments and what our rights are as U.S. Citizens. The class will
cover the three different branches of our government. Learn how our
founders worked together to form our government to protect our freedoms and how they can be threatened when the balance of power is broken. The goal of this
class is to have a clearer understanding of the rights and responsibilities we
all have as U.S. citizens.
Homework: YES 1 -2 hours of homework is required for this class.
